What's New at St. Joseph of the Pines

St. Joseph of the Pines’ Colleen Graham Honored with DAISY Award

Southern Pines, NC – June 6, 2024 – On Wednesday, June 5, 2024, Livonia, Michigan-based Trinity Health Senior Communities presented Registered Nurse Colleen Graham, who works at The Health Center at St. Joseph of the Pines, with the prestigious DAISY Award.  The DAISY Award is a special honor given to extraordinary nurses worldwide for the compassionate contributions they make through their expertise and character.

DAISY is an acronym for Diseases Attacking the Immune System. The DAISY Foundation was established in memory of Patrick Barnes, a 33-year-old patient at the University of Washington Medical Center who died as a result of having Immune Thrombocytopenia:  an autoimmune disease.  Following his death, his family wanted to honor Patrick and express their gratitude to the nurses who demonstrated not only clinical excellence, but also kindness, compassion, and sensitivity in caring for him and for all their patients. The DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses has become a strategic tool for nurse recruitment, retention, and resilience adopted by thousands of health care organizations and schools of nursing in the United States and around the globe. Trinity Health Senior Communities launched its DAISY Award Program in February 2024.

Colleen Graham has served at St. Joseph of the Pines since 2019.  According to her nominator, Colleen Graham is her mother’s favorite nurse, citing her “kindness and gentleness.”  The resident’s daughter said:  “Colleen always has time to talk with us when we visit.  We rely on her expert advice on what my mother needs or wants.  She shows this level of care and concern for all her residents and their families…When professional medical personnel take this type of care, their residents will thrive.  We appreciate her dedication.”

At the DAISY Award Ceremony held June 5, St. Joseph of the Pines Vice President Scott Brewton said:  “What a remarkable achievement for St. Joseph of the Pines – from among all nominations submitted Ministry-wide – to be home to one of the two honorees.  I am thrilled to shine a spotlight on Colleen Graham for her outstanding care and to thank her for representing the best of the best among THSC’s exemplary nurses.” inspections. For the first time, the Best Nursing Homes ratings feature a new measure on weekend staffing and another new measure on infection rates that led to hospitalizations.

U.S. News & World Report Names St. Joseph of the Pines Among Best in North Carolina

Southern Pines, NC – March 13, 2023 – As St. Joseph of the Pines celebrates its 75th Anniversary, its Health Center has been recognized as a Best Nursing Home for short-term rehabilitation for 2022-2023 by U.S. News & World Report.

The annual Best Nursing Homes ratings, now in their 13th year, assist prospective residents and their families in making informed decisions in consultation with their medical professionals about where to receive short-term or long-term nursing home care. Only 16% of U.S skilled-nursing facilities earned the “Best Nursing Home” designation this year.

“We are so proud of this recognition by U.S. News & World Report,” said Phyllis Jones, administrator at St. Joseph of the Pines.  “Our Mission calls us to high standards for quality, safety, and compassionate care.  The team at the Health Center works very hard to provide excellence every single day to those entrusted to our care, and this is a wonderful testament to our 75-year legacy of service in Southern Pines.”

For 2022-2023, U. S. News rated more than 15,000 nursing homes on care, safety, infection rates, staffing and health inspections. For the first time, the Best Nursing Homes ratings feature a new measure on weekend staffing and another new measure on infection rates that led to hospitalizations.

“Choosing the right nursing home based on care needs and comfort is a critical decision for prospective residents and their families,” said Zach Adams, health data engineer at U.S. News. “The Best Nursing Homes ratings highlight nursing homes that excel in short-term rehabilitation and long-term care needs.”

The Best Nursing Homes methodology factors data such as resident care, safety, and outcomes. To calculate the Best Nursing Homes ratings, U.S. News evaluated each nursing home’s performance using a variety of data obtained from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). Both short- and long-term ratings include data on consistency of registered nurse staffing, use of antipsychotic drugs, and success in preventing ER and hospital visits. The long-term care rating also includes measures of whether a home changed ownership and how well they were staffed on weekends. The short-term rehabilitation rating also includes measures of a home’s success in preventing falls, preventing serious infections, and making sure residents are able to return home.
